Gedling Borough has commissioned an appraisal of the Woodborough Conservation Area in order to identify the specific qualities of the village that contribute to its unique character and are worthy of protection and enhancement.  GBC is holding a public consultation on the Appraisal and accompanying Management Plan from Wednesday 16th November until the 16th December 2016. Once a Management Plan is adopted by GBC, planning officers will apply the recommendations to any planning applications for developments within the Conservation Area.

Residents who live in or close to the Conservation Area will receive a letter from GBC inviting them to take part in the consultation, but everyone can get involved. The report itself is lengthy but a very interesting read for anyone who is interested in the history, architecture and trees of the village. A paper copy is available for viewing at the Village Hall or it can be viewed online via GBC's website - click here to read the report (see "Consultation Documents") and to respond electronically. The consultants who have put the draft report together have recommended that the Conservation Area is extended in accordance with this map.

Woodborough Parish Council thanks Cllr Patrick Smith for his lead on this review and also  Mr David Bagley, Mr Mike Chapman, Mr John Harlow, Mr John Hoyland, Mr Paul Reed and Mr David Rose for giving up their time to contribute to the report.

What is a Conservation Area and why does it matter?

Areas of special architectural or historic interest are designated as Conservation Areas to help preserve and enhance them for future generations.

Once we have designated an area as a Conservation Area, we need to:

  1. Review Conservation Area boundaries to see if they remain appropriate.
  2. Publish proposals to preserve and enhance the Conservation Area.

Pay special attention to the desirability of preservation or enhancement of an area when exercising planning controls, including making planning decisions that ‘preserve and enhance’ the Conservation Area, by

Designation of a Conservation Area does not imply an embargo on development but it does give Gedling Borough Council additional controls over the demolition of buildings and the design of new development.
